Colic is a stress and frustration for parents who do not know what to give their babies and how to calm them down. If special teas for colic have become useless, then it is advisable to use probiotics, experts say.
Probiotics calm the cry of infants suffering from colic
Italian researchers have found that a certain probiotic supplement may be an option to relieve severe spasms caused by colic. They claim that administering several doses of Lactobacillus reuteri, a bacterium that promotes digestion, helps to quickly relieve crying caused by colic in infants.
Recent studies show that these abdominal cramps may be related to a weakened immune system that does not cope with bacterial imbalances in the gastrointestinal tract, and high levels of the bacterium called E.sheets can contribute to the installation of these spasms. Thus, the researchers argue that it is very possible that these pains can be alleviated with the help of probiotics (healthy bacteria) that would help restore the bacteriological balance in the intestines.
To validate this theory, the specialists performed an experiment on 46 children who suffered from colic, had a good health, did not have a medical history with gastrointestinal problems, were exclusively breastfed and had not received any probiotics a week before. testing: 25 of them received doses of Lactobacillus reuteri bacteria, and another 21 received placebo pills.
Less crying, less colic!
To validate the test result, the specialists measured the children's crying every day, calculating the minutes. Three weeks after the start of the experiment, the cries were reduced in both groups of infants, but in the group that was given probiotics, there was a considerable decrease in the time the baby cried in one day: from 370 minutes (to beginning of the study) at 35 minutes.
In conclusion, the findings suggest that colic symptoms in infants can be alleviated by probiotic supplements based on Lactobacillus reuteri, which also has positive effects on reducing E. coli levels in the digestive system (thus reducing digestive infections).
